Great for parents and retirees who don't want to drive at night! 12:14:03 From Dana Huber to Everyone: Awesome, Angela! 12:14:36 From Karen Barber to Everyone: "I do not want to be a part of the clubs I know about." Well, that's kind of hurtful. :-) 12:14:45 From Sabrina Taylor to Everyone: I now do a hybrid book club. I have an in-person meeting and a virtual meeting. I have had 3 virtual only meetings so far, and I have had 10 or more each meeting. 12:15:17 From Tom Holehan to Everyone: We also offer a hybrid book club at our library with in-house patrons as well as those who visit via zoom. During the pandemic it was all virtual and some of those people still don't want to attend in person. 12:15:36 From Tina O'Brien to Everyone: I have a couple of members of the books club that like to meet virtually. Some members are anxious to meet in person. Now that the weather is nice hopefully we can meet outside. 12:16:12 From Andrea Raymer to Host and Panelists: I'm loving the idea of a hybrid book club! Seems like the best of both worlds. 12:16:38 From Sarah Barker to Everyone: Has anyone tried or heard of doing a Couples Book Club? 12:16:38 From Sabrina Taylor to Everyone: With my virtual only book club, I get attendees from all over, Texas, Virginia, etc. I have yet to have someone from the state where I am based. I go through the website BookClubs, and that has definitely increased my attendance when it comes to the virtual crowd. 12:16:40 From Julie Edwards to Andrea Raymer, Host and Panelists: Hi Andrea - great insight, but it only came to me. You may want to change you chat settings to Everyone! 12:16:57 From Stephanie B. Herm to Everyone: I moderate for a group that is geared toward visually challenged library patrons. We meet In person and always offer an option to dial in , and some attendees habitually do one or the other, so we have both types of attendance at all meetings. One who dials in when she can is 100 years old, and would not get there otherwise. 12:17:12 From Tamra Hicks to Everyone: We have started a "What Are You Reading?" book club. We don't have a set book to read and everyone comes and shares what they are reading. It has been a great success and people are becoming interested in books that they would not have even thought about reading. 12:17:13 From Andrea Raymer to Everyone: Whoops, thank you! 12:17:18 From Claire Mueller to Everyone: After 2 years of virtual meetings, we reverted to in-person meetings this school year for our student book clubs (3-4th grade) and (5th-8th grade). Students overwhelmingly wanted to meet in person when given the choice. We had good numbers virtually and we weren't sure if that would continue in person, but it has. 12:17:20 From Sara Bedell-Spataro to Everyone: We started 2 new book clubs that take place at a coffee shop near the library. We have 10-11 people who sign up and 5-7 show up. The patrons prefer in person rather than Virtual. We have an option for people to Boast or Roast each book, so the book club is called Boast or Roast Book Discussion. 12:18:04 From Brooke Hensley to Everyone: I recently started a middle school and a teen book club, and am struggling to get the word out for attendance. it's so frustrating! 12:18:26 From Joyce Lee to Everyone: We let the host/member who chooses that month's book decide where we'll meet - library, restaurant, residence, zoom, etc. 12:18:54 From Heather Cain to Everyone: Hey Brooke, have you tried just having a list or paper go out for kids to just write their names for attendance? 12:18:55 From Sara Bedell-Spataro to Everyone: I named the other club, “Oh No, Not Another Book Club!” and the name is a magnet for new participants. :-) 12:19:01 From Heather Cain to Everyone: used to do that in high school 12:19:11 From Sabrina Taylor to Everyone: The website BookClubs allows people to recommend books that they would like for our club to read and discuss. 12:19:16 From Katie DeKorte to Everyone: @Sara - LOVE the "Boast or Roast" title. Previously I used "Rant or Rave" but I'm going to change it up :) 12:19:21 From Julie King to Host and Panelists: We have a 3rd-5th grade and Teen book to movie club. They read the book throughout the month and at the end of the month we discuss the book and then watch the movie. Stuart Little, Chronicles of Narnia, Jumanji, etc.... 12:19:25 From Sabrina Hoster to Everyone: Tamra Hicks, My book club, Books & Brews is like the "what are you reading?" I pick a theme or genre, they pick their own book. We meet at the local pub! 12:19:26 From Debbie Greene to Everyone: I wonder about reading a chapter aloud (perhaps the first meeting) to get started? 12:19:36 From Elizabeth Hood to Everyone: My YA book club flyers are apparently invisible; I've only been able to recruit new members through one-on-one interactions 12:19:44 From Sara Bedell-Spataro to Everyone: Thank you Katie! 12:19:50 From Brooke Hensley to Everyone: @heather I have a sign up sheet at the front desk, but I think maybe I should put it at the children's dept desk instead. 12:20:15 From Brooke Hensley to Everyone: @ Elizabeth SAME!! 12:20:36 From Heather Cain to Everyone: @Brooke fair enough, school libraries is not my cup of tea 12:21:08 From Elizabeth Hood to Everyone: @Brooke I think teens talk themselves out of it without ever picking up the book unless you're there to actively talk them into it 12:21:14 From Brooke Hensley to Everyone: @heather, I work in a public library and haven't had much success in my attempts to communicate with the local school librarians 12:21:22 From Sabrina Taylor to Everyone: I also have a problem with my attendees sometimes getting off topic. This tends to happen more with my in-person crowd, while the virtual crowd seems to stay more on topic. I have had several instances in which attendees did not like the book, but they were still very passionate about their hatred of the book. 12:21:24 From Claire Mueller to Everyone: Yes, we promote at the Youth Desk and one on one recommendations are often fruitful. With the tweens, the first meeting of the year is Readers Choice (any book they choose). Two other meetings of the year are genre specific, but they are given a choice of 3 or more books from which to choose. 12:21:58 From Julie Edwards to Everyone: Just a reminder that I’ll be sending the slides, recoding, chat transcript, a resource list from Davina, and links to free downloads to the reports Davina is mentioning in the follow up email. 12:22:12 From Julie Edwards to Everyone: And feel free to put any questions for her in the Q&A box! 12:22:22 From Sara Bedell-Spataro to Everyone: @Julie, thank you! 12:22:30 From Deborah Brown to Everyone: I have found that various book clubs and film clubs that I been a member of sparked more interesting discussion if the book topics were diverse and controversial, such as the American Civil War. 12:22:37 From Heather Cain to Everyone: @Brooke I completely understand. My high school librarians had the same issue with not much attendance but it was also because we had a lot of secret book worms that didn't like the attention 12:22:43 From Anndi Bownes to Everyone: @ Sabrina that is a great idea! We could get that started easier than trying to agree on what book to read. 12:22:51 From Ashley Hudson to Everyone: @Brooke, have you thought about reaching out to maybe PTA groups to share with them? They are the parents and they have a direct connection. They might also have newsletters that go out to all the parents. 12:23:05 From Wei Ling Goh to Host and Panelists: One of my participants often go off-topic by talking about another book that they really like but are not really related to the book we are discussing. 12:23:32 From Elizabeth Hood to Everyone: @Brooke Email the school librarians and offer to come teach their kids database research. They'll be so excited to get it taken off their plate, they'll actually listen to whatever else you have to say! 12:23:44 From Sabrina Hoster to Everyone: @Julie, Thank you! I have to unfortunately leave early... I have to work the desk. I'm looking forward to further info! 12:24:02 From Brooke Hensley to Everyone: @ashley that's a great idea! I hadn't thought of PTA groups. I have a couple of homeschool groups that registered for it and the word spreading via parents really made a difference there. 12:25:25 From Julia Todd to Everyone: Can we get a copy of the checklist? 12:25:33 From Barbara Fields to Everyone: We are also trying to get a teens bookclub started but so far not had much luck. We had 3 the first meeting and then it just got worse after that. WE haven't given up hope we are still trying. 12:25:36 From Sabrina Hoster to Everyone: @Anndi Bownes, Thanks! Most of us have read different authers brought to the group ! Also, I assigned Graphic novel/manga one month... some people had NEVER read on! They love them now! 12:26:07 From Dana Huber to Everyone: Graphic novels are a great gateway drug -- usually quick to read 12:26:23 From Anastasia Bazilevskaya to Everyone: Good afternoon! Anastasia from Brentwood Public Library, NY 12:26:33 From Julie Edwards to Everyone: There will be lots of links and resources I’ll share in the email! 12:26:35 From David Tran to Everyone: We run a Manga book club and it's great. We get families, parents and their kids attending 12:26:45 From Sabrina Hoster to Everyone: I have found that if you supply food/snack... the teens are a bit more willing to come... sometimes just for the snack.. but, hey they're there! LoL 12:27:00 From Claire Mueller to Everyone: Definitely serve snacks for kids! 12:27:13 From Dana Huber to Everyone: If you have teen volunteers who need community service hours you might be able to wrangle them into doing a book club as part of it 12:27:19 From Elizabeth Hood to Everyone: You can set it up like a coffee house, lower the lighting if possible, bring pillows... 12:27:29 From Sara Bedell-Spataro to Everyone: Adults love the snacks too! 😂 12:27:34 From Anndi Bownes to Everyone: Good for you Barbara Fields! Don't give up, I really believe in that you got to start somewhere, even if its just a few people. 12:27:47 From Ashley Hudson to Everyone: My adults love our snacks lol 12:28:16 From Barbara Fields to Everyone: We have had an Adult Bookclub for over 25 years and still going strong. Usually 15 to 20 every month 12:28:16 From Sabrina Taylor to Everyone: I always provide a bottle of water and a small snack. Right now the snack of choice is goldfishes. 12:28:21 From Rick Pelletier to Everyone: I can't pick anything with a pink cover so my group refuses to read Lessons in Chemistry. 12:28:29 From Jack Nix to Everyone: We call our book club "Books & Bagels!" because we always serve bagels. I think it keeps them coming back lol 12:28:39 From Arthur Dollard to Everyone: I want to convince our BOD to allow us to host a book club at a local brewery. Unlikely but I'm hopeful 12:28:48 From Tom Holehan to Everyone: Books Over Coffee is the program here! 12:28:49 From Ashley Hudson to Everyone: @rick what's the reasoning for no pink covers? 12:28:50 From Sabrina Hoster to Everyone: I feel like the fact that I do Books & Brews in a local pub is the main draw for most participants! LoL 12:28:53 From Devin Ortiz-Hoffman to Everyone: @Rick, I would argue Lessons in Chemistry is more orange than pink 12:28:55 From Nora Mulligan to Everyone: I always give my people choices -- four or five different books where there are enough copies in the system that everybody can get a library copy. 12:29:11 From Claire Mueller to Everyone: I host a Poetry Café theme once a year for the final meeting for tweens. Kids read a novel in verse and poems from an anthology. At the meeting, we have café tables, tealights, and snacks. Kids take turns sharing poems out loud with the group. 12:29:14 From Tom Holehan to Everyone: YES! In our discussion of LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY, several complained about the cover color and art! But they LOVED the book! 12:29:28 From Kayla Herrington to Everyone: I do Books and Brew at our local coffee house too! It keeps people coming because they reach a different demographic than I do! 12:29:30 From Jack Nix to Everyone: I have been thinking about partnering with a local bar to do something like that... Maybe for the summer! 12:29:39 From Anndi Bownes to Everyone: I have heard very frequently, if you feed them, they will come! LOL 12:29:41 From Ashley Hudson to Everyone: @arthur, I got our director to ok us having a meeting at a wine bar. I just pitched it as a special occasion as it was for our Christmas meeting 12:29:45 From Jenni Hemphill to Everyone: Just started an adult book club and starting it out genre based. This has worked well with my teens and thought I would try and do this for a few months with the adults 12:29:50 From George Hobbs to Everyone: Jack - we have a Books & bagels as well. A morning group. Then we have Tea Time Talks (going 6+ years!) tea cups, tea pots, coffee, & cookies/scones. 12:30:01 From Rick Pelletier to Everyone: @Ashely the reason is that the color pink does not translate to a good book/literature. I don't understand that reasoning but they are adamant about it. 12:30:17 From Jack Nix to Everyone: George - I love that idea! 12:30:23 From Erin Brooks to Everyone: My club members like that I call in copies from other branches for a display and create a custom bookmark with the next meeting date and time. 12:30:39 From Caitlin Clark to Everyone: @Erin I love that idea. 12:31:00 From Anndi Bownes to Everyone: @Erin Brooks, very creative idea using the bookmarks, tailored for you guys! 12:31:08 From Denise Dorn to Everyone: I create a book club suggestions list every year from the best book of the year lists from the Washington Post, Goodreads, lithub, the New York times, award/prize winners. the titles stay on the list for 5 years. caveat: the library has to won at least 8 copies. 12:31:22 From Sara Bedell-Spataro to Everyone: I’m getting some great ideas and yes @Erin, I might steal that one! 12:31:51 From Crystal Jennings to Everyone: We have had awesome success with genre book clubs! Our Horror club is our best attended in the county. 12:31:55 From Stephanie B. Herm to Everyone: 'My' book clubbers get five choices, and vote on 2 per month: wide variety of subjects chosen 12:32:28 From Wendy Skevington to Everyone: What do you call your Horror book club? 12:32:42 From Julie Edwards to Everyone: I ran a Classics Book Club when I was in the public library and people loved it! Themed clubs can work really well! 12:32:43 From Peggy McGuire to Everyone: What is in a book club kit? 12:32:43 From Ruth Young to Everyone: I hope we can see this chat afterward - there are awesome ideas here! 12:32:49 From Laura Janiga to Everyone: Our book clubs have embraced interlibrary loan after exhausting the library's book club collection 12:32:52 From Darla Patterson to Everyone: I have about 20 books wrapped in paper. Each month a person picks a wrapped book to select. Most of these books are best sellers, or on my TBR pile 12:32:56 From Samantha Chiappone to Everyone: Our horror book club is called, Oh, the Horror! 12:32:58 From Brooke Hensley to Everyone: For my teen club, I use ALA GreatStories Club's themed reading lists. You can read as much or as little as you choose of any of the books, so it provides a bit of freedom on choices. 12:33:01 From Julie Edwards to Everyone: @Ruth yes! I will share the chat transcript! 12:33:02 From Ruth Young to Everyone: Our book club also uses ILL 12:33:05 From Barbara Fields to Everyone: We did a Book Club reading based on books where they would like to travel or visit, This was a great success. 12:33:14 From Heather Cain to Everyone: Oh my Goth! 12:33:21 From Sabrina Taylor to Everyone: My club is a mystery book club but we don't always do the classic mystery. We do thrillers, psychological, cozy, historical. We do older books, newer books. I try to do different types of mysteries. I tell people if you don't like one book, that's fine, you might like the next book. I don't always like what we read, but I have found several authors/series that I now enjoy. 12:33:26 From Ashley Hudson to Everyone: our book choices are announced 3 months at a time so I try and have a theme for those 3 months. like this summer is "summer of spice", we're a romance group, and then we pick things that go into that theme 12:33:31 From Kate Struble to Everyone: I'm currently doing a "Read It Before You See It" book club so people read the book before it's adapted as a TV series or a movie. It's a fun idea! 12:33:49 From Brooke Hensley to Everyone: I've been toying with a book-to-film club, too. 12:34:04 From Crystal Jennings to Everyone: Wendy, Book Club 217. Kind of an If You Know, You Know name. 12:34:30 From Wendy Skevington to Everyone: ha ha ha 12:34:31 From Claire Mueller to Everyone: Does anyone hold a Mother-Daughter book club? If so, what titles have worked? 12:34:31 From Rick Pelletier to Everyone: I ran a book to film club. It was fun. Had a good turnout. 12:34:40 From Lisa Shaffer to Everyone: We have a book club & film discussion group at our library and periodically team up so the book group reads the book & the film group watches the film in the same month. 12:34:56 From Anna Hallex to Everyone: That's what I did last summer, and it was such a big hit I'm doing it again! 12:35:00 From Neela Schlimper to Everyone: I have a book to movie book club 3 times a year. Mostly themed books. ex> African American Appreciation Month etc 12:35:02 From Anna Hallex to Everyone: Mine is with teens. 12:35:03 From Barbara Fields to Everyone: I appreciate all the ideas you have come up with and would like to use some of them. This is a great meeting for me 12:35:05 From Jaime Dudajek-Burgdoff to Everyone: I co-facilitate two book groups at our public library. "Books Of Our Lives" has been going since 2018. We had up to 15-20 members in attendance pre-COVID. COVID was hard. We are currently back up to about 13-17 members who attend monthly. Many of the members are original members but we also have some new members as well. We have great, vibrant discussions but in a laid-back atmosphere. We have always been very open and continually re-evaluate. We brainstorm together. My co-facilitator and I ask a lot of questions regarding satisfaction of the club. Our biggest challenge is being limited in what we can read. Because we are a public, library-run group, we must have enough copies of the book available in the system in order to read it. The co-facilitator and I proposed picking two books per month and splitting the group (we could mix up members each month). The group overwhelmingly shot down that idea. They all want to stick together. 12:35:15 From Jack Nix to Everyone: I always get a lot of requests to do "classics" so this summer the picks with all be classic books and we're also going to show the movie adaptations after the discussion. The group members are excited! 12:35:49 From Julie Edwards to Everyone: @Jack I was surprised how much people loved it! Good luck! 12:36:16 From Virginia Campbell to Everyone: Do any of you have experience running a Spanish Book Club? 12:36:25 From Ashley Hudson to Everyone: our group also really loved reading books by local authors and then I reached out and all of the authors came to the meetings about their respective books. it was a huge hit! 12:36:50 From Mary Wenzel to Everyone: Our library purchases multiple copies of selected book club titles and catalogues them as "Book Club Set". These have a designated shelf area, but are available to any patron to check out. Each book club member who wants a library book club copy is responsible for checking it out on their personal library cards, first-come first serve. Members who attend the monthly meetings get first dibs on their copies, but we do displays each month of upcoming titles and anyone can check those out. 12:36:52 From Neela Schlimper to Everyone: This year we read The Secret Lives of Bees and then watched the movie with themed snacks. 12:36:52 From Nora Mulligan to Everyone: Virginia, we're starting one -- the biggest problem is that there aren't enough copies of books in Spanish in our library system. 12:37:18 From Brooke Hensley to Everyone: ohhh, I want to try a cult classics club! 12:37:22 From Julie Edwards to Everyone: Feel free to put any questions for Davina in the Q&A ! 12:37:23 From Vanessa Velez to Everyone: does nobody borrow multiple copies via ILL? 12:37:28 From Heather Cain to Everyone: @Virginia do you mean like Spanish translated books or those with Hispanic characters and backgrounds? 12:37:34 From Lisa Shaffer to Everyone: we borrow copies via ILL a LOT 12:37:36 From Anna Evans to Everyone: We do! 12:37:48 From Jack Nix to Everyone: We always borrow via ILL 12:37:49 From Ellen Koppy to Everyone: We do ILL for some of our book clubs and book kits for others 12:37:51 From Claire Mueller to Everyone: Yes, we borrow through ILL 12:37:51 From Monique Gerken to Everyone: We borrow multiple copies from ILL for ALL our clubs 12:37:59 From Wendy Skevington to Everyone: Is there a source to ILL book club kits? 12:38:05 From George Hobbs to Everyone: Some of our librarians will lease copies rather than do ILL 12:38:21 From Brooke Hensley to Everyone: In Kentucky, we have a variety of book club programming kits through the Kentucky Dept of Libraries & Archives (KDLA). It uses the same courier as ILL. Maybe see if your state has something similar? 12:38:22 From Vanessa Velez to Everyone: lease?? 12:38:25 From Jaime Dudajek-Burgdoff to Everyone: We borrow from within our 45 member system. ILL would take too long and be too unpredictable. 12:38:35 From Monique Gerken to Everyone: In CT, our state library has book club kits we can ILL 12:38:39 From Karen Gertsch to Everyone: Hello from NW Tennessee! We are a small county library and our book club is comprised of adults who take turns choosing the book and facilitating the discussion. When we first met 23 years ago the members were retired older ladies. It has evolved to include 30 year old and up, men and women. We have lost members due to a man and a woman who both tend to monopolize discussions and are very opinionated authorities on EVERYTHING! Any suggestions? 12:38:40 From Ellen Koppy to Everyone: @Wendy in our consortium libraries will catalog "book club kits" as Title Book Club Kit 12:38:44 From George Hobbs to Everyone: We lease books from Baker & Taylor 12:38:45 From Teresa Whitson to Everyone: Do you get charged for ILL's? 12:38:47 From Sabrina Taylor to Everyone: I don't do a title if I can't get at least 15-16 copies of it. We are part of a system that links to many library systems in the state, so that opens the books we can do. 12:38:49 From Anna Hallex to Everyone: pointwaist 12:39:12 From Angela Boggs to Everyone: I'm really curious about the lease option. 12:39:15 From Jack Nix to Everyone: Teresa - no, we don't get charged. 12:39:16 From Anna Evans to Everyone: In Iowa we have book club kits that can be ILL 12:39:18 From lori cochran to Everyone: @karen Gertsch that is amazing! 12:39:35 From Laura Janiga to Everyone: I'm in Indiana, and we have a humanities org that maintains a collection plus the state library also maintains a list of public libraries who self-report having collections for the sharing 12:39:40 From Trisha Parsons to Everyone: Interesting. We are fortunate to have in our budget the ability to purchase copies for our patrons in book clubs. We purchase them from our local book store. 12:39:41 From Jaime Dudajek-Burgdoff to Everyone: Inter-library loan for our system means looking across the country. Some books take weeks to arrive. It's not do-able for a book club. It also would get expensive. 12:39:53 From Wendy Skevington to Everyone: Anna Evans Could a library from AZ ILL those kits? 12:40:06 From Katie DeKorte to Everyone: @Karen - Share and establish ground rules at the beginning of the meeting. That way, if/when they start to monopolize the time or dismiss other people's opinions, you can refer back to the rules of the program and hold them accountable. 12:40:12 From lori cochran to Everyone: @trisha parsons....that is really really nice! 12:40:24 From Anna Evans to Everyone: I don't know why not. 12:40:26 From Elizabeth Caione to Everyone: We are launching book club kits next year. How was attendance after utilizing this practice? 12:40:41 From Wendy Skevington to Everyone: @Anna Evans we would be willing to pay postage both directions 12:40:53 From Milvia Nogueira to Everyone: Hi all, thinking of diverse, it would be great if we could have a email group and share the books we are reading and so we could have some new people once in a while that could join another group club for discussing a book that you already read... just a suggestion... Milvia from Hyannis Public Library here! 12:40:59 From Deborah Brown to Everyone: To NW Tennessee: My book club members talk in a specific order (going around the room in order) and one person talks at a time, which seems to allow everyone a change to talk for only a few minutes and no one dominates discussion. I have always found the structure and good use of time is very important in library programming. 12:41:10 From Anna Evans to Everyone: Our book club is about 20 12:41:33 From Julie Edwards to Everyone: I’ll be sending out a link in the email I send! 12:41:43 From Anna Evans to Everyone: email me at aevans@camanche.lib.ia.us 12:41:52 From Linda Holik to Everyone: can we get a copy of this webinar? Lots of great stats to share with our board... 12:41:58 From Jaime Duval to Everyone: rmceldowney@botetourtva.gov 12:42:02 From kelley riha to Everyone: Many thanks for this session! 12:42:10 From Joan Battley to Everyone: Great presentation !!! 12:42:13 From Joan Hill to Everyone: Thank you 12:42:16 From Stephanie Lamb to Everyone: Any suggestions on encouraging more gentlemen and younger adult attendees to book clubs? 12:42:22 From Anna Evans to Everyone: Thank you! 12:42:24 From Kelsie Burnard to Everyone: Thank you!!! :) 12:42:27 From cindy merz to Everyone: Thank you! 12:42:27 From Martha Olver to Everyone: and the chat, too, please 12:42:29 From Rodette Jones to Everyone: Thanks for the great tips to encourage our readers in book clubs 12:42:30 From Kendra Williams to Everyone: thank you! 12:42:31 From Heather Cain to Everyone: Thank you! 12:42:31 From Sandy Abbott to Host and Panelists: Thank you Julie and Davina! 12:42:33 From Aleta Mendenhall-Turner to Everyone: Thank you! 12:42:33 From Stephanie Lamb to Everyone: Thank you!! 12:42:34 From Josh Wanamaker to Host and Panelists: So very helpful! Thank you! 12:42:34 From Milvia Nogueira to Everyone: Thank you! 12:42:34 From lori cochran to Everyone: This was great, thank you! 12:42:35 From Jaime Dudajek-Burgdoff to Everyone: We are subscribers! It's an AWESOME resource. Thanks, Davina! 12:42:37 From Linda Holik to Everyone: Thank you so much!!! 12:42:39 From kimberlee Patton to Everyone: This was amazing!! Thank you NA and Davina. Please have Davina back again. 12:42:40 From Cathy Johnson to Everyone: Thank you Davina,Julie, everyone.I have to leave and sert up for chair yoga 12:42:45 From Marilyn Smith to Everyone: Thank you 12:42:45 From Michele Ulrich to Everyone: Thank you so much. Such great ideas and insights 12:42:47 From Barbara Fields to Everyone: Thank you, can you send certificates of attendance 12:42:48 From Donna Wherry to Everyone: Thank you 12:42:50 From Claire Mueller to Everyone: Thank you very much! Great questions and suggestions in the Chat box also! 12:42:52 From Stephanie Perrotta to Everyone: Great presentation - thank you 12:42:53 From lucy Ochoa to Everyone: Thank you! 12:42:56 From Megan MacElroy to Everyone: thank you! 12:42:57 From Sabrina Taylor to Everyone: I have a man who goes to our monthly needlecraft club, but I can't seem to get any man to come to book club. That is definitely difficult to get men to attend. 12:43:06 From Laura Janiga to Everyone: Great presentation and resources, thank you! 12:43:06 From Corrine Selba to Everyone: Thank you! Starting a homeschool teen/tween book club in our public library this fall! :) 12:43:06 From Linda Trevino to Host and Panelists: Thank you! 12:43:09 From Eric Alicea to Everyone: Thank you Davina! 12:43:10 From Jorge Maldonado to Everyone: Thank you for the presentation! 12:43:12 From Connor Warren to Host and Panelists: Super informative, thank you so much! 12:43:13 From Rick Pelletier to Everyone: Thank you! This was great! 12:43:13 From Kim Wilson to Everyone: Great Webinar! 12:43:17 From Dena Kimball to Everyone: Thank you! 12:43:20 From Charlotte Hamilton to Everyone: Thank you! 12:43:24 From Yashikah Clayton to Host and Panelists: Thank you! 12:43:24 From Martha Olver to Everyone: thanks 12:43:26 From Jack Nix to Everyone: omg great question! I have that problem in mine 12:43:28 From Brooke Hensley to Everyone: Middle School Mysteries actually meets this evening- we read The Thief Lord and we are having Italian snacks along with the location of the book. Thanks, all! 12:43:31 From Shauna Beulah to Everyone: This was very interesting. Thank you, so much. Great tips!! 12:43:36 From Stephanie Hestand to Everyone: Thank you 12:43:36 From Neela Schlimper to Everyone: Very interesting webinar! Thanks for the suggestions! 12:43:39 From Joanna Meighan to Everyone: What are some ways of getting a book club started? We've started a book club but it seems to be hard getting members. 12:43:51 From Jorge Maldonado to Everyone: I have trouble getting people through our book club's door. What do you recommend for that? 12:43:52 From Anna Evans to Everyone: I love the idea of snacks that go along with the book! 12:44:05 From Crystal Jennings to Everyone: To the other person running a horror book club, maybe we could ILL books back and forth? My email is crystal.jennings@nevadacountyca.gov if you have any interest. 12:44:17 From Mary-Anne Minshull to Everyone: I'm in Manitoba. Some of the bigger libraries here have created Book Club Kits, and have put them on our ILL system. If we just search "book club kit," a bunch come up. 12:44:42 From Neela Schlimper to Everyone: But attendees love the themed snacks that correlate to the book. 12:44:55 From Anndi Bownes to Everyone: So many great ideas, THANK You for everyone who is sharing!! 12:44:55 From George Hobbs to Everyone: Even having a man lead the discussion doesn't help bring in men. We don't read a book - we share what we have read in the last month. This seems to work for the few men that have attended, but they aren't as consistent in attendance as the women. 12:44:56 From Lana Winchester-Tucker to Everyone: Would you recommend the Facilitator read the book, or rely on notes, reviews etc from the internet 12:45:00 From Nora Mulligan to Everyone: You have to be patient when you're starting book groups. One of mine started with one or two people showing up each time -- over the years it's grown to be 17 plus at a meeting, and that's after the drop from the pandemic. 12:45:00 From Cathe Spencer to Everyone: Sometimes a facilitator just has to 'yank' the discussion away from someone--it can be hard! 12:45:03 From Stephanie Lamb to Everyone: Thanks for the feedback Sabrina. I wish you luck in getting more gentlemen members too! 12:45:06 From kimberlee Patton to Everyone: Would there be a way for everyone to time how much they spent talking and then we compare times at the end? 12:45:14 From Nora Mulligan to Everyone: Facilitator should read the book, I think. 12:45:15 From Bethany Mott to Everyone: We start at the beginning with going around the room and everyone getting a minute or two to give thoughts, without interruption or comments. That's helped a bit with the long winded. 12:45:22 From Marilyn Smith to Everyone: whats included in a bookclub kit? 12:45:27 From Mary Wenzel to Everyone: Does the ODP even realize how much they dominate? I'd bet not a lot of the time. 12:45:28 From kimberlee Patton to Everyone: It's usually the men who say they don't feel like they spoke half as much as they really did. 12:45:31 From Hannah Reidell to Everyone: When I would lead my book club, I used intentionally ask people by name who spoke less to answer questions first so that they would have a chance to speak before the more vocal people chimed in 12:45:36 From Carole Ahmed to Everyone: I noticed that some members talked a lot more during pandemic and last year than before pandemic. I think they just needed people to talk to! 12:45:44 From Kelsie Mendez to Everyone: Thank you for the resources!! 12:45:50 From Elliott Walcroft to Everyone: Our Book Club in a Bag kits have a laminated sheet of discussion questions and 10 copies of the book 12:45:52 From Mary Kinney to Everyone: FaceBook, Twitter 12:46:01 From Wei Ling Goh to Host and Panelists: I have a ODP in my book club and I usually let them finish the sentence, and then jump in as quickly as I can, thank them for speaking, and ask a specific member their thoughts to break the monologue. It has been effective so far, though I have been wondering whether I need to pull her aside and let her know... 12:46:04 From Katie DeKorte to Everyone: I use Meetup and it is wildly successful, engaging, and accessible 12:46:07 From Deborah Brown to Everyone: One library program discussion group I was in had very specific discussion topics that were discussed in a specific order. We went around room in a circle and each group member got to talk for a few minutes only about that specific topic. It kept the discussion on more on topic. The facilitator kept the discussion moving and staying on topic. 12:46:17 From Denise Farmosa to Everyone: I personally ask people that haven't spoken; So and so, what do you think? 12:46:18 From Wei Ling Goh to Everyone: I have a ODP in my book club and I usually let them finish the sentence, and then jump in as quickly as I can, thank them for speaking, and ask a specific member their thoughts to break the monologue. It has been effective so far, though I have been wondering whether I need to pull her aside and let her know... 12:46:20 From Nancy Roberts to Everyone: We us Meetup too 12:46:27 From Nora Mulligan to Everyone: Bethany, We do that at the beginning of each meeting, and have each person say their name, did they read the book, did they like it, and one sentence about why they did or didn't like it. This also gives the facilitator some clue about where the discussion needs to go. 12:46:28 From Jennifer Demas to Everyone: A lot of our new people tell us that they found us by doing a google search for book clubs near me. 12:46:31 From Sylvia Collins to Everyone: Advertise the book clubs in other programs! 12:46:51 From Ashley Hudson to Everyone: we've found that eye-catching but effective promo materials really help. We almost exclusively use Canva to design our flyers 12:46:55 From Lisa Shaffer to Everyone: We have 12 "banned book" kits with 8 copies of the books and a discussion guide. The books vary from classics to more recently challenged books. 12:46:55 From Hollie Dabb to Everyone: The kits for our library has 7-10 copies of the title, a bag to carry them, and a discussion guide that has a summary, info about the author, and 8-20 questions that can be used to guide discussion. 12:46:58 From Marilyn Smith to Everyone: Thank you for answering the book club kit question 12:46:59 From kimberlee Patton to Everyone: Any tips on running 2 book clubs at the same time? My first one is strictly non-fiction. So the other one is mostly fiction, but flexible. 12:47:02 From Rodette Jones to Everyone: Advertise on next-door neighbor, facebook 12:47:12 From Dena Kimball to Everyone: we've teamed up with our local indie Bookstore Capricorn Books to do two book clubs a month! 12:47:23 From kimberlee Patton to Everyone: Can I find resources for book club templates? 12:47:23 From Danielle Oh to Host and Panelists: Does anyone notice a difference in attendance between book clubs that are open for drop-ins and book clubs that require registration? 12:47:25 From Nora Mulligan to Everyone: Kimberlee, I run three -- email me at nmulligan@thefieldlibrary.org 12:47:26 From Sherrill Burgess to Everyone: Could someone define what is included in a book bag? 12:47:29 From Tina O'Brien to Everyone: I display the book for the month and there are posters around the library to show the books that book club is reading for the next 2-3 months 12:47:32 From Sabrina Taylor to Everyone: In my virtual book club I always begin with everyone introducing themselves and saying where they are from since they come from all over, both in the United States and Canada. 12:47:39 From Lucy Dennett to Everyone: Hannah, if you're still on, if you'd like to talk to a fellow Brit, my email is lucy.dennett@loudoun.gov. 12:47:41 From Stephanie B. Herm to Everyone: Free Conference Call: attendees dial in on a phone and enter a 6 digit number, and they are part of the discussion. No computer needed except possibly by host. (I have it on my computer and can see who all is dialing in.) 12:47:42 From Danielle Oh to Everyone: Does anyone notice a difference in attendance between book clubs that are open for drop-ins and book clubs that require registration? 12:47:50 From Hannah Reidell to Everyone: advertise your book selections. I had a small core who came every month, but then random people would appear for just occasional ones because they liked the specific book we were discussing that particular month 12:47:56 From Carolyn Savage to Everyone: We purchase copies of the books for our book club members to use then after we turn the books into a kit for checkout. The kits include discussion questions and author bio. 12:48:10 From Ashley Hudson to Everyone: Our facebook has a large following, our local book store lets us put up small flyers in the correlating sections. 12:48:18 From Ashleigh Suter to Everyone: Our BCIAB kit is also a bag containing a laminated discussion guide (also available online), 10 copies + large print/audio when available. 12:48:20 From Chidimma Offor to Host and Panelists: Hi All I run a Toni Morrison In-Person group in Washington DC at the DC Public Library if anyone is interested :) 12:48:22 From Dena Kimball to Everyone: It's been great working with Capricorn Books! We've had local author signing/Q&A events! Jenkintown Library in PA 12:48:43 From Wei Ling Goh to Everyone: @Danielle Yes - drop-ins get better attendance! Thank you! 12:49:04 From kimberlee Patton to Everyone: Males enjoy nonfiction!!! 12:49:09 From George Hobbs to Everyone: Friends of the Library do a great job for promoting our discussions 12:49:13 From Beth Sheridan to Everyone: Read Colleen Hoover to get young adults! 12:49:18 From kimberlee Patton to Everyone: My nonfiction is 51% male 12:49:22 From Stephanie B. Herm to Everyone: I find it helps to mention that you don't have to read the book to be welcome at the meeting. 12:49:22 From Nora Mulligan to Everyone: Mysteries and thrillers also bring in men. 12:49:33 From kimberlee Patton to Everyone: Men also like true crime. 12:49:47 From Debbie Greene to Everyone: Maybe people could pick a character from a book and come dressed as such? 12:49:52 From Mary Howard to Everyone: Wea are bringing book clubs to assistive living centers, where populations sometimes cannot get out to a branch or have difficulty with technology. 12:49:59 From Katie DeKorte to Everyone: I run a "Forever Young Adult" book club that celebrates adults reading YA books. It's a national program - https://foreveryoungadult.com/ 12:50:16 From Tom Manion to Everyone: Diversity of topics might help in the 12:50:21 From Lindsay Josey to Everyone: We read all kinds of genres and have a couple of married couples, which is fun! 12:50:36 From Milvia Nogueira to Everyone: @maryhoward that is awesome! 12:51:20 From Sara Lena Jensen to Everyone: I have loved the dynamic of parent/child book clubs- it brings out so many topics between family members 12:51:24 From Angela Boggs to Everyone: We are actually going to try a family book club this summer in hopes of promoting reading to your child beyond the early elementary age. We are targeting the tween (ages 9-12) age group. 12:51:34 From Jenni Hemphill to Everyone: @Lindsay, I like how you have married couples... different viewpoints even in the same household! Or even similar viewpoints. That's awesome! 12:51:35 From Charlotte Gray to Everyone: A group of men have started their own book club at our library. About 6 of them attend 12:51:37 From Deborah Brown to Everyone: One library discussion group that I was in brought a special guest, who represented diversity, which added some diverse perspectives to the discussion. 12:51:39 From Sara Lena Jensen to Everyone: and works well to have a platform to discuss topic with pre-teens 12:51:44 From Jennifer Demas to Everyone: I make sure to choose a good variety of genres and authors - I try to make sure that I do as many books with male protagonists as well as female protags over the course of the year. 12:52:16 From Jennifer Demas to Everyone: We have some husbands come but have also gotten males in the 25-35 too 12:52:36 From Katie Broker to Everyone: Is there a good resource for questions facilitators can ask the group? 12:52:38 From Danielle Enos to Everyone: @Angela we're also trying out a book club for that age group. 12:52:51 From kimberlee Patton to Everyone: @Angela Boggs, I love that!!! 12:52:52 From Wei Ling Goh to Everyone: In my book club, I primarily select the books and I make sure to diversify genres and authors. 50% of the titles I select are by BIPOC or underrepresented groups. It's working well so far but we are nearing the end of the cycle for the year, so I will be conducting a health check to see what everyone else thinks about the selection. 12:53:01 From Keli Wright to Everyone: Leaving a little space allows for deeper thinking rather than instant responses. 12:53:16 From Anna Hallex to Everyone: My book club is only with teens during the summer, but I do try and balance out the male and female protagonists to keep everyone interested. John Green's books are good for that. 12:53:49 From kimberlee Patton to Everyone: Would a teen book club that includes the required book readings be successive? 12:54:06 From kimberlee Patton to Everyone: My library is going to start a 100 Books before Graduation and meet monthly. 12:54:07 From Rachel Manela to Everyone: I set my book schedule at the start of the year so people have access to all the book titles ahead of time and can choose which months to come to if they can't always make it 12:54:11 From Wendy Skevington to Everyone: I arrived late. What is the booklet Davina holds ups periodically? 12:54:21 From Dena Kimball to Everyone: I'm AuADHD, and struggle with not creating an environment that feels too "school like". I like extension opportunities to deep dive. I like enriching the book club discussion with ideas and info that enhance the discussion. advice? 12:54:28 From Cathe Spencer to Everyone: The facilitator has to read the book! 12:54:33 From Anastasia Bazilevskaya to Everyone: We have Friendly English Book Club for English learners. We discuss one short story a month, and the participants are provided with vocabularies in English and Spanish (we serve a big Spanish-speaking community) and discussion questions in advance to help them with reading. 12:54:41 From Julie Edwards to Everyone: @Wendy - it’s a report I’ll send in the email with the recording! 12:54:41 From Anna Evans to Everyone: I find book questions on litlover 12:54:58 From kimberlee Patton to Everyone: I have to keep my books under 350 pages 12:55:02 From Wendy Skevington to Everyone: @Julie Edwads THANKS! 12:55:05 From Bernadette Kitiyakara to Everyone: Thank you!! This helped me decide how to put together the book club I had ideas about. 12:55:05 From Sylvia Collins to Everyone: I think disliking books is an interesting wrinkle in a book discussion. 12:55:06 From Stephanie B. Herm to Everyone: Helps me if I listen to the book. Same as reading, for me 12:55:08 From Michelle Carlson to Host and Panelists: I wholeheartedly disagree with the library staff having to read the book to lead the discussion. We are not paid to read so it is not fair to ask staff to use personal time to read for their job. 12:55:10 From Patricia Givens to Everyone: My college had a lot of retired male professors and authors who used the library. There was interest in setting up a "Gentlemen's Book Club" that would meet at a restaurant once a month to discuss non-fiction books. Has anyone ever tried a club like that? How are men's book clubs different than women's book clubs? 12:55:18 From Hannah Reidell to Everyone: I had two meetings where I struggled to read the book, but that in itself lent to the discussion 12:55:21 From Jaime Dudajek-Burgdoff to Everyone: The questions of reading the book is an interesting question. It came up two days ago in a librarian group I'm part of on fb. There were MANY who didn't read it and didn't feel it was necessary. 12:55:50 From Nicole Brooks to Everyone: I have a list of the books that we have read in my book club, plus who chose it. 12:55:57 From Anna Evans to Everyone: Sometimes everyone reads the book, sometimes they dont 12:56:01 From Michelle Carlson to Host and Panelists: I think you can lead a discussion as a neutral party without having read the book. That is with, proper preparation of background knowledge of the book, author, and discussion questions. 12:56:07 From Paul Morgan-Witts to Everyone: @Wendy - the booklet Davina is holding up is a printed copy of the BookBrowse research reports. You will be getting links to download the pdf. Also visit BookBrowse.com/wp for info on printed versions. 12:56:20 From Dena Kimball to Everyone: I find audiobooks Jenk me to keep up. 12:56:23 From Tina O'Brien to Everyone: When the library book club did not have a facilitator we asked the different members to volunteer to facilitate. I think they like having one person to facilitate the book club 12:56:24 From Anna Evans to Everyone: One of the last books we read everyone hated! I have never had that happen before! 12:56:25 From Linda Holik to Everyone: Do book clubs ever read non-fiction titles with any success? 12:56:27 From Nicole Brooks to Everyone: Plus I record the number of people who came, but not specific names. 12:56:27 From Anita Murphy to Everyone: We have between 7 and 9 people in our group and we all take part in choosing books. When you choose a book, you are the facilitator for it. that way I (the librarian) do not have to always be the facilitator. Everyone has been very open to this. 12:56:31 From Sabrina Taylor to Everyone: It is okay to not like a book. That can still lead to good, passionate discussion. People are reading the book and talking about it, so I consider that a good thing. 12:56:31 From kimberlee Patton to Everyone: I use bookclubs.com to engage with the members throughout the month, post the discussion guide, and ask questions and polls. 12:56:39 From Jaime Dudajek-Burgdoff to Everyone: We always read the book, personally. Part of the discussion also had to do with if you read the book on your work time or on your own time. 12:56:51 From Stephanie B. Herm to Everyone: So many good ideas! 12:56:56 From Katie DeKorte to Everyone: NF - I read and discussed "You're Not Listening" by Kate Murphy and it was a fantastic discussion 12:57:03 From Deborah Brown to Everyone: I think that library book clubs and library programming attendance statistics help tell your story to library administration and the community about the popularity of library programs, and also the demand for types of library programming that the community needs. 12:57:05 From Nancy Roberts to Everyone: Linda - we read Boys in the Boat (nf) and everyone loved it. 12:57:05 From Wendy Skevington to Everyone: @Paul Morgan-Witts Thank you 12:57:10 From Nicole Brooks to Everyone: @anita Murphy. We do, too. 12:57:17 From Hannah Reidell to Everyone: Perhaps there is a difference between how facilitator is understood. Are they there to be involved in the discussion or are they there to show people where the bathroom is and turn the lights off at the end? If they are there just in the latter form then they don't need to read the book, but if they are there to be involved in the discussion then I would say they should be 12:57:18 From Sabrina Taylor to Everyone: I also use bookclubs.com 12:57:19 From Dena Kimball to Everyone: What do you think of spicy book clubs? 12:57:31 From Katie DeKorte to Everyone: NF - And "The Art of Gathering" by Priya Parker was great as well 12:57:41 From Jana Hill to Everyone: Our book clubs read a mix of fiction and nonfiction, and our readers seem to love that. 12:57:41 From Anna Evans to Everyone: I would love to try a spicy book club! 12:57:46 From Stephanie B. Herm to Everyone: I have the book choosing for my group: I choose 4 fiction and 1 nonfiction, and the NF ones are chosen more often than I would have thought. 12:58:11 From Angela Boggs to Everyone: Has anyone tried a book club based around personal growth? Using books from Brene Brown, Adam Grant, Simon Sinek, etc. 12:58:25 From Lucy Dennett to Everyone: OK, I have a meeting to get to. Thank you everyone. 12:58:30 From Dena Kimball to Everyone: We just read Helen Hoang's Kiss Quotient for Auti 12:58:31 From Nora Mulligan to Everyone: With a longer book, you can choose to take more time to read it -- we had one book that was 900 pages which one person really wanted us to read, so we took the whole summer to read it and came back together in September. 12:58:33 From Cathe Spencer to Everyone: I'm off to my next meeting--thank you all for a wonderful session! 12:58:34 From Beth Nelson to Everyone: We have done a Cookbook Book Club. We called it "Read it and Eat." Each member chose a recipe to bring and we did a taste test. This was pre-COVID, but it could be done in a modified way. 12:58:58 From Kaleb Kramer to Everyone: @Angela- I am considering one and starting with Brene Brown was what I was considering, although much slower placed discussion groups 12:59:01 From Jody Stotts to Everyone: Sorry I must go cover a public service desk. This was wonderful! Thank you Davina! 12:59:04 From Deb Coggans to Everyone: Thank you! This was very helpful! 12:59:06 From Anna Evans to Everyone: We normally read Marie Benedict books, and they go over really well. 12:59:12 From Jessica Doss to Everyone: I run a nonfiction, outdoor book club that meets at a local park and we discuss nature books and adventurous memoirs. All of the chosen books are under 400 pages, and our members have enjoy the fascinating discussions! 12:59:20 From Joanna Meighan to Everyone: Thank you! 12:59:20 From Deborah Brown to Everyone: I would suggest bringing print copies of book reviews, author biographies, articles from magazines for the book club members to read about diverse topics and books. Not everything has to be discussed orally! 12:59:24 From Beth Nelson to Everyone: Thank you Davina, this was great food for thought! 12:59:26 From Katie DeKorte to Everyone: @Angela - I tried doing books from a "leadership book club" list assembled by my library's supervisors. We read 4 over 4 years and they were only lukewarmly received. 12:59:28 From Nicole Brooks to Everyone: Thank you, Davina and Julie! Great discussion. 12:59:30 From Bree Dumont to Everyone: Thank you 12:59:41 From Neela Schlimper to Everyone: Thanks for all the tips! 12:59:44 From Kerri Dame-Robinson to Everyone: Thank you! 12:59:44 From Renee Wilson to Everyone: Thanks so much! 12:59:44 From Dena Kimball to Everyone: Autism Acceptance month, as an AuADHD human, I chose Helen Hoang's Kiss Quotient. it's quite spicy. 12:59:50 From Danielle Enos to Everyone: Thank You 12:59:58 From Melanie Beyer to Everyone: I just started a spicy book club in addition to our long standing traditional one. A very useful webinar. 13:00:12 From Debbie Greene to Everyone: That is too bad. Politics are important. 13:00:17 From Ashley Hudson to Everyone: We're a romance book club and we definitely discuss sex. It's the sex the characters are having and not personal lol 13:00:18 From Wendy Skevington to Everyone: @Jessica Doss Can you share the backlist of your adventure/outdoor book club? 13:00:26 From Tina O'Brien to Everyone: Thank you that was a great webinar I must get back to working the front desk. 13:00:27 From Andrea Raymer to Everyone: Thank you! This was amazing! 13:00:29 From Carolyn Savage to Everyone: Thank you! It is a statewide effort from the Maryland Humanities 13:00:34 From kimberlee Patton to Everyone: Sometimes it is hard to not mention politics with certain topics. We read The Address Book and the Color of Law 13:00:34 From Deborah Fagnan to Everyone: Thank you from Sussex County Library System! 13:00:34 From Angela Boggs to Everyone: @Kaleb, my director did small group work with Dare to Lead and it was broken down chapter by chapter. 13:00:35 From Marion Johnson to Everyone: Thank you very much! 13:00:36 From Krista Klemmer to Everyone: Thanks for the presentation! 13:00:37 From Eric Alicea to Everyone: Thank you so much!
