I've been wanting a short presentation on empathy this is perfect 11:32:19 From Carl Andrews To Everyone: This is why there's a huge disconnect between teachers and students in urban public schools. So when that member responded in an outsize manner to a suggestion I made last week, I recognized the pain it was coming from. Instead of getting stuck in an email exchange, I invited him to a working lunch today, and I just came back from a very productive conversation. So not reacting to reactions can be very useful. 11:33:59 From Carl Andrews To Everyone: And all of those factors don't support a :"trauma informed, safe space. 11:34:04 From Emily De Leon To Everyone: @Nicole, and that speaks to the need to keep your own needs met before trying to meet everyone else's 11:34:44 From Nicole Valentino To Everyone: @carl, or for their supervisors to makes sure they have what they need so they can make sure their students get what they need... 11:35:49 From Tracy Bicknell-Holmes To Everyone: Can you share the link to the video with us? 11:36:01 From Carl Andrews To Everyone: For some students, just being in the library is a traumatizing experience. 11:36:11 From Tara Farrar To Everyone: I recently started following @mychal3ts on Instagram. Can I help with something? 11:39:37 From Kymberlee Powe To Everyone: ☺️ 11:40:28 From Heather Clark To Everyone: Are there some good resources for autistic staff who struggle with empathy as a result of their neurodivergence? 11:40:53 From Lisa MacLellan To All Panelists: Nope! It's the best hobby I ever picked up. 11:42:49 From Kymberlee Powe To Everyone: oop *care not case 11:42:56 From garifalia durkin To Everyone: yay! crochet! 11:43:02 From garifalia durkin To Everyone: I am learning. 11:43:03 From Julie Edwards To Kymberlee Powe and All Panelists: OMG do you crochet too? 11:43:15 From Kymberlee Powe To Everyone: I do!!! 11:43:31 From Carl Andrews To Everyone: Stretching, while breathing, helps too. 11:43:38 From Renee Goods-Fisher To Everyone: Self care- eating right, getting enough rest, getting exercise, connecting with family & friends in a meaningful way, doing things you enjoy i.e. craft. 11:43:40 From Julie Edwards To Kymberlee Powe and All Panelists: ☺️Me too - so soothing. 11:43:42 From Dacy Shute To Everyone: I love doing a body scan 11:43:45 From Shelley Catwell To Everyone: I've heard self-care referred to as "self-maintenance". You have to keep the engine running to be able to be useful. Buzz word self care is like detailing the car. Self maintenance is changing the oil 11:43:53 From Kymberlee Powe To All Panelists: It really is! 11:43:57 From Adrianne Brady To Everyone: We LOVE a body scan 11:44:07 From Chelsea Clough To All Panelists: My therapist showed me a technique called rainbow grounding, you look around the room and try to find an item of each color 11:44:41 From Laura McLean To Everyone: I run a Crafternoon group and one of the ladies commented that while her family member was going through cancer, she crocheted like mad to relieve stress and to keep her from pacing. She made so many afghans and winter accessories! 11:44:58 From Megan Sherrill To Everyone: @shelley I love that! That is such a better way to look at it! So many people view self care as something more luxurious than it is meant to be 11:45:04 From Julie Seely To Everyone: My New Year's Resolution this year was to say "No" more often. Been doing it since I was 12 :) 11:47:25 From Anastasia Bazilevskaya To Everyone: Thank you very much! It has been helpful! 11:47:25 From garifalia durkin To Everyone: I feel like I know the answer to this but I want to hear and learn from others that may have experienced this. I work with someone whom is strong and caring and has clearly been through some difficult life events. However, they use them as excuses to continue to be hard on themselves and throw out examples that feel like they should win the Trauma Olympics. LIke, " well, I have been through this ……." Unfortunately, this is dismissive/disreagding of the trauma that someone else may have experienced. As if other traumas are irrelevant. 11:47:37 From Emily De Leon To Everyone: Would the compulsive "sorry" count as people pleasing? 11:47:53 From Liz Ward To Everyone: The agreement thing is often called "fawning" 11:48:23 From Carl Andrews To Everyone: This is where it becomes complicated! And we haven't even started the reference interview. 11:48:33 From Laura McLean To Everyone: Thank you Beatriz! Great information! I have to leave a little bit early. Thank you Julie and Niche Academy as well! 11:48:38 From Kylee Butler To All Panelists: Compulsive apologies can count as people pleasing- depending on the context. Sometimes people apologize just for the act of existing. 11:49:04 From April Holmes To Everyone: Thank you for all of this information! It's very helpful! 11:49:09 From Erin Bontempt To Everyone: Thank you for your time and expertise, Beatriz 11:49:12 From Jen Woo To Everyone: Thank you, Beatriz. Your knowledge is much appreciated. 11:49:33 From Rachel Hollis To Everyone: Is it possible to get the trauma gold winner closer to self-realization? 11:49:34 From Aleisha Edenfield To Everyone: Thank you so much for all the information and knowledge you have shared with us today, Beatriz! 11:49:48 From Sherry Campbell To Everyone: Thank you - very informative and useful! 11:50:25 From garifalia durkin To Everyone: I listen and care but I don't know how much of my interest in listening has helped. How can I acknowledge that "yes. you are strong but I can also be helpful and caring without demeaning you. you deserve to be heard and all trauma is trauma." 11:50:38 From Karla Umland To Everyone: Can the 6 principles be listed again please? 11:51:04 From Melissa Friedman To Everyone: safety 11:51:14 From Uche Ohia To Everyone: Thank you for throwing more light on this issue 11:51:19 From Rachel Hollis To Everyone: How about just saying that? 11:51:32 From Johanna Dadisman To Everyone: I will definitely be reaching out thank you! 11:51:49 From Dacy Shute To Everyone: Some states have mandatory reporting laws for all citizens. For example, in NC all adults are mandated reporters by law. 11:52:05 From garifalia durkin To Everyone: Yeah. I suppose it helped to type it out. 11:52:10 From Melissa Friedman To Everyone: safety, trustworthiness and transparency, peer support, collaboration and mutuality, empowerment, voice and choice, cultural, historical and gender relevant are the 6 11:52:21 From Karla Umland To Everyone: thank you!!! 11:52:31 From Hypha Fries To Everyone: @ Garifalia - It depends on the reason why they self-deprecate. Ive experienced someone who did this as a form of narcissism to make them seem like the most damaged or most broken of the group. There's little you can do for a narcissist, but you can sometimes shut them down with "Then perhaps you can show some empathy since you know where they are coming from". If they are purely self-deprecating because they are truly believing it, I would provide them a place of no judgment and a place of listening. They want to be heard, but they're worried they're too broken to seek help. It helps to show them over and over that they are not beyond help and deserve that help they so dearly need. It may be exhausting, and you need to take steps back to keep from getting burnt out or frustrated, but it's worth it 11:52:59 From Isabel Villarreal Stewart To All Panelists: I'd love to address: How do we avoid re-traumatization for youth of color in the library, especially when library staff can be seen as authority figures? 11:53:13 From Elda Reyes To All Panelists: thank you 11:53:44 From Maria Vanessa Cipolla To All Panelists: Can you please place contact information slide back up? 11:53:50 From Rachel Hollis To Everyone: You'd stop me cold and slip me into vulnerability with your question/statement. 11:54:03 From Amy An To Everyone: Ask a Manager blog has some great scripts for talking to managers and coworkers. Sometimes people just need it pointed out to realize they're making things a competition even if unintentionally 11:54:59 From Carl Andrews To Everyone: The was a wonderful discussion!
